ms RHENUS DUISBURG: tailor made solution
Since its establishment in 1912 the current Rhenus Group has grown into a prominent company for logis- tic services in the broadest sense of the word. Over 24,000 employees work at the 390 locations where their companies are located. The joint turnover in 2014 amounted to € 4.1 billion. The company provides transport and storage in the most efficient manner for their customers making use of every imaginable mode of transport. They use airfreight, rail transport, over 7,000 trucks, a short sea fleet of 63 ships of which 15 are their own coasters. The inland waterway fleet has 370 units of which 73 are owned and con- sist of 9 dry cargo vessels, 7 pushers and 42 barges, 7 bunker vessels and 7 slob tankers. Rhenus has its own terminals in sea and inland ports, operates 24 inland waterway shipping container terminals in the hinterland of the European seaports and has high storage capacity.

We are the guest of Dr. Wolfgang Honemann, managing director of Rhenus Logistics and Herbert Berger, manager of the techni- cal department at the head office of Rhenus PartnerShip in Duis- burg-Ruhrort. They are pleased to give a detailed explanation of the construction of the ms RHENUS DUISBURG: before the order is given to design and build a new ship within our own fleet, an extensive examination takes place within the framework of Rhe- nus Logistics’ mission ‘Together with Passion’ on how a new ship will add value to the quality and reliability of service to their cus- tomer. ‘You cannot just deploy a ship from the market’ says Ho- nemann, ‘Every customer, every load, each route and transport plan demands a specific performance that we must bring about together with our customer’ he continues and gives an example. The shipping of agricultural bulk on the Danube requires a dif- ferent approach than the transport flows to the industrial hinter- land of the Rhine. Honemann: the container transport that we maintain within our 45 scheduled transport services constitutes approximately 20% of our transports. The remaining 80% of the (bulk) load consists of building materials, minerals, chemicals, coals and agricultural products. Last year our share in the transport on the European inland wa- terways amounted to 456 million tonnes. When the load is of strategic importance for the recipient additional agreements are made that do not frustrate a ‘just-in-time’ process. We heard for instance that a chemical factory could not be supplied over wa- ter through an obstruction of the Rhine. Within Rhenus Logistics a previously defined redundancy plan was immediately imple- mented: replacement transport by train and truck. If it is neces- sary unexpectedly, the same solution can also be applied within transport contracts for the provisioning of coal burning power plants. Within the normal daily course of events everything possible is done with tight and realistic sailing schedules to guarantee the normal operations of the company through a constant supply of goods. Within the context of an underlying transport contract the ms RHENUS DUISBURG is ‘tailor made’ to guarantee a
maximum coupled load capacity for which the heights of bridges along the route are taken into account. The ship has been deve- loped in close consultation with the customer and with the support of the Development Centre for Ship Technology and Transport Systems (DST). It has a length of 110.00 x 11.45 me- tres and has a maximum draught of 3.20 metres. Herbert Berger explains that the ms RHENUS DUISBURG sails with three barges from ports within the ARA region to Wesel. This requires a large motor capacity. Rhenus has opted for two Caterpillar main engines of the 3512C type, each with a capacity of 1118kW. Each engine drives a screw with a diameter of 2000 mm. To optimize the water supply to these large screws it was decided to apply the Van der Velden ‘flex tunnel’. These can be extended at low water so that they can continue to provide the screws with an undiminished flow of water. The ms RHENUS DUISBURG is the first ship on which ‘flex tunnel’ tech- nology has been applied. For the route from Wesel to Luenen two barges are coupled to a waiting canal pusher. On the canal the ms RHENUS DUISBURG sails with one barge for which the propulsion occurs through two C18 type Caterpillars, which are both good for 368kW. The re- turn journey with three barges from Wesel again takes place only using the capacity of the two C18 engines The hull for the 110.00 metres long ms RHENUS DUISBURG was delivered by Rensen-Driessen. It has been built at the S.C. San- tierul Naval Orsova S.A. shipyard in Romania. Up till now Rensen- Driessen has had almost fifty hulls built there, the quality of which have been amply proven in the market. Dolderman in Dordrecht is going to finish the ship and deliver it turnkey to Rhenus Logis- tics. During the building of the ship the relationship between Rhenus Logistics and Rensen-Driesen Shipbuilding was continued even further with a second order: another double walled slob tanker will be built for use on the Danube.
ms RHENUS DUISBURG: tailor made solution

Santie- rul Naval Orsova S.A. in Rumänien.

IN-HOUSE DESIGN DEPARTMENT
Our organization has mastered the tailor made design, calculation and engineering of inland and maritime vessels. This enables us to pro- vide our customers a high degree of flexibility. The core business of Rensen-Driessen Ship- building B.V. is to design, build and supply all conceivable types of ships and marine equip- ment, from complex gas tankers, passenger ships to offshore barges. The inland navigation market demands a wide range of ship dimensions and design specifica- tions. From small, light air draft tankers to large bunker tankers and container ships. In the de
sign we consider the key criteria such as air draft, carrying capacity, speed, stability, etc.
developer of new projects we have introdu- ced the Schelde construction in our inland tanker designs. In collaboration with 'Schel- de Naval Shipbuilding' in Vlissingen we have performed extensive calculations that have led to an approved design for larger cargo tanks and a crashworthy side skin of the ship. These cargo tanks are ideal for large tankers. Because of their size, they can de- crease the number of cargotanks and thus different quantities of appendages.
Equally important is to incorporate the incre- asingly stringent class and I.L.T. (Traffic and Water Management) rules and stability re- gulations in the designs. Taking into account the important design requirements, Rensen- Driessen Shipbuilding B.V. possesses ex- tensive knowledge and experience in this- field to quickly and efficiently produce various ship designs for our clients. BROKERAGE SERVICES
Rensen-Driessen Ship Brokers B.V. is an outstanding partner for the negotiation, purchase, sale and financing of existing ships. Our business consists of dry cargo vessels, tankers, passenger ships and pontoons. Our experience and expertise enables us to provide even starters with expert guidance and advice about the right vessel and the right financing options. George Rensen (sworn shipbroker), Wim Driessen and Twan de Goeij (both qualified E.M.C.I. shipbrokers) have for a long time been ac- tive in the existing ship market, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Our network is huge and covers many different areas of the maritime industry. When you use our services, you get what you are looking for because you will have chosen our personal way of doing business. After spending years on board, George Rensen returned to dry land and at the age of 33 started work at a ships mortgage bank as commercial assistant. Several years later, he decided he wanted to set up his own company and in 1980 he founded Rensen B.V. with which he began to focus on ship brokerage. In due course George Rensen was able to call himself a “sworn shipbroker” but he wanted to do more than broker the purchase and sale of existing ships so he began to specialise in the design, construction and completion of hulls. Negotiating the purchase and sale of existing ships was taken over by Wim Driessen and Twan de Goeij in 2006. They changed the name of the company to Rensen-Driessen Ship Brokers B.V. The leaders of Rensen-Driessen Ship Brokers B.V. form a close and enthusiastic team that has earned its place in the maritime industry, both in the tanker and dry cargo industries. The inland waterway market is going through turbulent times. In spite of this, with regard to the purchase and sale of existing ships, there is still some movement in the market. We manages to flourish, even when times are tough, because of the personal approach they have toward doing business.
On account of the fact that the development and construction of ships takes place with the “Rensen-Driessen Group”, we are able to take care of everything you need under one roof.

One very noteworthy design was developed in collaboration with Rommerts Ship Design. This is the design of a 135 x 17.50 x 6.20 meter bitumen (asphalt) tanker. These tankers are triple hulled and are capa- ble of operating even when the cargo reaches temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. The design provides an ingenious solution in terms of functionality, safety, and optimum redundancy.
