FOUNDED IN 1980 IN ZWIJNDRECHT – WITHIN A STONE’S THROW OF ROTTERDAM AND STILL OUR HOME BASE – WE’VE BEEN BUILDING SHIPS FOR OVER THREE DECADES NOW. It’s the new way of building structures that rely on an optimal impact resistance. Transporting and fuelling your ship with LNG is simply safer, thus allowing Y-Shape hull tankers to carry more tanks than other ships.

AS A SHIPYARD-INDEPENDENT COMPANY, WE MAINTAIN CLOSE PARTNERSHIPS WITH SEVERAL SHIPYARDS AT HOME AND ABROAD. THIS ENABLES US TO FIND THE BEST FIT FOR YOUR SPECIFIC SHIP DESIGN AND NEEDS, WHILE GUARANTEEING RENSENDRIESSEN QUALITY. Our building surveyors will fully manage the operation on your behalf, from start to finish. This ensures project progress and timely supply deliveries and inspections. After the hull build is completed and inspected, the hull will be transported to The Netherlands. Optionally, we offer you our turn-key delivery. One of these branches is the passenger vessel branch, with its own unique requirements and specifics. Edwin Diepeveen is a specialized cruise ship broker with a deep understanding of the markets whom spearheads our passenger vessel division.

The design is based on the typical dimensions for inland ships: 110x11.45 m. The depth is limited to 3.55 m., instead of the more common 3.65 m. This reduces steel weight, and together with her new bodylines in fore- and aft ship, this gives the vessel much better draught, meaning she can carry more cargo in shallow waters. WE ARE SURPRISED TO HEAR THAT THEY WON’T BE HERE MUCH LONGER, BECAUSE THEY ARE DUE TO MOVE TO A NEW HOME IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE. BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT WE CAME HERE TO ASK THEM ABOUT. THE COMPILER OF THIS BOOK HAS ASKED US TO RECORD THE EXPERIENCES OF MEEUWISSE BINNENSCHIFFAHRT GMBH DURING AND AFTER THE BUILD OF ITS NEW ELVIRE MOTOR TANKER.

a future-oriented option that would benefit the profitability and continuity of their company. Later, they were forced to mothball the new-build subject for the longer term because of the consequences of the economic crisis, which had only just started at that time. In 2015, the subject was raised for discussion again, during a meeting with Alexander (Lex) Fontijne from Plouvier subsidiary Intertrans Tankschiffahrt. Lex Fontijne has an unparalleled understanding of the logistics market and of the best way to respond to demand with joint interests in mind. He advised Donald and Renate to approach Rensen-Driessen Shipbuilding B.V. about a new double-hulled ship that would facilitate healthy operations in their particular navigation area. A meeting was arranged, the parties clicked and enjoyed a fruitful relationship based on mutual enthusiasm and trust that extended from the first to the very last meeting. Donald and Renate provided Driessen and his colleagues with detailed information about their company, clients, navigation area and the products they transport. They sail with a five-man crew, operating in two shifts of three hours each. It’s a team that has been working together for more than 20 years now, because of which they know exactly what to do and when. Meeuwisse Binnenschiffahrt GmbH transports mineral

The ship was delivered turnkey to Meeuwisse Binnenschiffahrt GmbH, which is run by Donald Meeuwisse and his sister Renata Simon-Meeuwisse, at the end of December last year. This brother and sister have been immersed in the world of inland shipping since an early age. Their father, Steve Meeuwisse, set out on his first voyage in his own ship in 1973, when he founded the company that we know today. The original ship was followed by a new-build and other ships from the market, including the RP Basel motor tanker. This is the ship on which Donald started his career as a captain in 2003. In 2009, Meeuwisse senior transferred the company to his son and daughter. The family has been transporting goods for shipper Plouvier Transport for 20 years now. The new rules applicable to tanker shipping with effect from 2018 are set to affect their business operations too. RP Basel, their single-hulled motor tanker will no longer be in compliance with regulations, for example. This came as no surprise, as evidenced by the fact that this subject had already featured on Donald and Renate’s agenda on various occasions. A number of possibilities had been considered, including the conversion of the ship into a vessel with a double hull, an option that others in the industry were looking at too. The siblings felt that this would not be

products in the broadest sense of the term. Its voyages are always upstream, to fixed destinations like Karlsruhe and Basel. The company’s ships often navigate canals too. For example, Bottrop/Gelsenkirchen, which has a maximum air draft of 4.20 metres.

The hull arrived at Dolderman’s premises on 29 September 2016. ‘This marked the start of a huge outfitting process’ says Donald. ‘The company had everything it needed in Papendrecht to make the project a success’ he adds immediately, telling us briefly how happy he was about Dolderman’s outfitting work. Nothing was too much for the Dolderman team that worked on their ship. There were no surprises, we were consulted about everything and we were always able to speak to the same people. Everything was always just as it should be, right down to the very smallest detail. Donald gives an example: the fixtures for deck lighting. There was no need for us to paint anything ourselves; everything was fitted in stainless steel as standard. There weren’t any DIY jobs left for us to handle anywhere else on board either: Dolderman provides turnkey delivery in the strictest sense of the term. Delivery and the first voyage both took place at the end of December 2016. When we ask them what they think after having used the ship for three months, their answer leaves no room for doubt: ‘we are really surprised how well the ship handles’. We got far more than we had expected. The ship delivered to us is above and beyond what we were promised. The ship handles reliably and manoeuvres flawlessly. We are very pleased with the engine rotation speed and fuel consumption too. Where we used to use 210 litres of fuel on trips and voyages in our previous ship, we use just 160 litres today. The savings that we are able to achieve really stack up when you consider them over the space of a whole year. This includes the time saved thanks to rapid ballasting (jets) and unloading (up to 1,000 m3/hour). ‘However, these time savings are at the expense of our crew’s downtime’, jokes Donald. To summarise, Meeuwisse Binnenschiffahrt GmbH is very happy about the entire experience. ‘It was a successful investment for the family and we would definitely opt for the same parties if considering a new build again in the future’ say Donald and Renate.

It didn’t take long for the conversation to turn to Rensen-Driessen’s Moneymaker tanker. The most obvious competitive advantage offered by a 110.00 x 11.45-metre ship was the shallow depth of 4.65 metres in the case of an air draft of 4.20 metres (with ballast). In the case of a draught of 3.20 metres, the eight tanks have a joint capacity of 2,638 tons. However, even when the draught is limited to 2.80 metres (for example), a Moneymaker is still able to boast a capacity of 2,170 tons. One of the secrets of its success is the fact that it has eight tanks rather than the 10 customary on other vessels. This saves steel, keeps the weight of the ship down and yields cargo-related and fuel advantages too. The brother and sister were very interested and the next step led to the identification of some changes that they wanted, which were then incorporated in detail in drawings and in the calculations below. If the build-plan was given the go-ahead, Rensen-Driessen Shipbuilding would be able to deliver the ship to them on a turnkey basis. The hull would be delivered by S.C. Santierul Naval Orsova S.A. as per the design agreed on, while outfitting would be completed by Dolderman B.V., a company based in Dordrecht in the Netherlands. Armed with the build-plans and a positive operation-calculation for the first several years, the family arranged an appointment in April to see a German banker that they had been able to rely on for decades. The approval needed was gained, contracts were signed and an exciting time started for Donald, Renate and their partners. Renate’s partner produces designs and is involved in engineering in the field of maritime- shipping electronics. Renate and Donald’s wife Annemarie sat down to decide on the layout of the ship and spent many enjoyable evenings discussing all kinds of plans. During the build, the family visited Orsova three times, the last of which was on 19 August 2016, to witness the launching of the ship and attend its naming ceremony.

(Lex) Fontijne van Plouvier’s dochteronderneming Intertrans Tankschiffahrt het onderwerp opnieuw aan de orde gesteld. Als geen ander weet Lex Fontijne wat de logistieke markt verlangt en op welke wijze je binnen het gezamenlijk belang daarop het best kunt inspelen. Hij adviseert Donald en Renate eens met Rensen-Driessen Shipbuilding B.V. te gaan spreken over een dubbelwandig nieuwbouwschip dat een gezonde exploitatie mogelijk maakt binnen hun vaargebied. De afspraak werd gemaakt en vanaf het eerste tot het laatste gesprek was er een klik die wederzijds werd gedragen door enthousiasme en vertrouwen. Driessen en zijn collega’s kregen van Donald en Renate een gedetailleerd beeld geschetst van hun onderneming, de opdrachtgevers, vaargebied en producten die ze vervoeren. Ze varen met vijf man in twee shifts van drie. Het is een team dat al meer dan twintig jaar met elkaar vaart en naadloos op elkaar is ingespeeld. De lading van Meeuwisse Binnenschifffahrt GmbH omvat minerale producten in de ruimste zin van het woord en de reizen gaan altijd naar boven met vaste bestemmingen als Karlsruhe en Basel. Ook de kanalen worden druk bevaren zoals Bottrop / Gelsenkirchen met een maximale kruiplijn van 4.20 meter.

Het schip is eind december vorig jaar turnkey aan hen opgeleverd, de onderneming van Donald Meeuwisse en zijn zus Renate Simon-Meeuwisse. Broer en zus groeiden op in de binnenvaart. Vader Steve Meeuwisse maakte in 1973 zijn eerste reis met een eigen schip en werd daarmee de grondlegger van de huidige onderneming. Later volgde een nieuwbouw en andere schepen uit de markt, waaronder het mts RP Basel. Het is dat schip waarop Donald in 2003 als kapitein is begonnen. In 2009 heeft vader zijn onderneming overgedaan aan zijn zoon en dochter. Al twintig jaar vaart de familie voor bevrachter Plouvier Transport. De nieuwe regels voor de tankvaart per 2018 zouden eveneens hun bedrijfsvoering raken. Hun enkelwandigmts RP Basel zou daarmee niet matchen. Op zich geen nieuws want vanzelfsprekend stond dit onderwerp terugkerend op de agenda van Donald en Renate. Ze hebben voor de vorm al eens gekeken naar ombouw tot dubbelwandig, dat was even actueel in de branche. Ze vonden het geen toekomstgerichte optie die goed zou zijn voor de rentabiliteit en continuïteit van hun onderneming. Later moesten ze het onderwerp nieuwbouw voor lange tijd laten rusten door de gevolgen van de crisis die toen nog maar net was begonnen. In 2015 werd tijdens een gesprek met Alexander

Het casco arriveerde op 29 september 2016 bij Dolderman. ‘Daarmee begon een geweldige periode van afbouw’ zegt Donald. ‘Vanuit Papendrecht was dat goed te doen’ voegt hij er meteen aan toe en vertelt ons in vogelvlucht hoe tevreden ze zijn over de afbouw bij Dolderman. Niets is te veel voor het team van Dolderman dat aan hun schip werkt. Nooit verrassingen, altijd overleg, altijd dezelfde mensen. Ook de kleinste details waren dik in orde. Donald noemt een willekeurig voorbeeld. De armaturen van de dekverlichting. Niks zelf schilderen, alles was standaard in RVS uitgevoerd. Ook elders aan boord ontstonden nergens doe het zelf klussen: Turnkey in de strakste betekenis van het woord. De oplevering en eerste reis vond plaats eind december 2016. En als we nadat ze drie maanden met het schip hebben gevaren naar hun ervaringen vragen dan komt er een resoluut antwoord: ‘we staan er echt van te kijken hoe het schip zich in de praktijk gedraagt’. We hebben veel meer gekregen dan we verwachtten. Alles wat er van beloofd werd is overtroffen. Het schip gedraagt zich betrouwbaar en manoeuvreert vlekkeloos. De omloopsnelheid van de motoren en het daarbij horende brandstof verbruik stemt ons zeer tevreden. Op terugkerende trajecten en reizen draaiden we vroeger 210 liter terwijl we dat nu doen met 160 liter. Reken die uren en verschillen maar eens door over een heel jaar. Ook tijdwinst bij het snelle ballasten (jets) en lossen (tot 1000 m3/u) ‘Maar die tijdwinst gaat wel ten koste van de rust van de bemanning’ grapt Donald. Samengevat wordt er door Meeuwisse Binnenschifffahrt GmbH met volle tevredenheid teruggekeken naar de wijze waarop Rensen-Driessen hun beloftes hebben waargemaakt. ‘Het werd een succesvolle investering voor de familie waarmee de keuze voor een toekomstige nieuwbouw door dezelfde partijen nu al vast staat’ vinden Donald en Renate.

Het duurde niet lang of de naam van Rensen-Driesen’s type Moneymaker viel voor het eerst. De meest in het oog springende concurrerende eigenschappen van een 110.00 x 11.45 meter worden gevormd door de geringe holte van 4.65 meter bij een kruiphoogte van 4.20 meter (met ballast). Bij de diepgang van 3.20 meter hebben de acht tanks een gezamenlijke capaciteit van 2.638 ton. Zelfs wanneer de diepgang beperkt is tot b.v. 2.80 meter is een Moneymaker nog steeds goed voor 2.170 ton. Het geheim van het succes schuilt ondermeer in de acht tanks in plaats van de elders gangbare tien. Dat scheelt staal, gewicht en levert lading- en brandstofvoordeel. De interesse van broer en zus was meer dan gewekt waarna de volgende stap leidde tot wat gewenste aanpassingen die in detail op de tekeningen werden aangepast en in onderliggende berekeningen werden doorgevoerd. Als het bouwplan doorgang kon vinden zou het schip turnkey door Rensen-Driessen Shipbuilding geleverd kunnen worden. Het casco wordt in die opstelling geleverd door S.C. Santierul Naval Orsova S.A. en de afbouw kan plaatsvinden in Nederland bij Dolderman B.V. in Dordrecht. Samen met de bouwplannen en een positieve exploitatieberekening voor de eerste jaren werd in april een bezoek gebracht aan de Duitse bankier waar de familie al tientallen jaren het vertrouwen geniet. De lichten gingen op groen waarna de contracten werden ondertekend en een spannende periode aanbrak voor Donald, Renate en hun partners. Renate’s partner maakt ontwerpen en engineert op het gebied van de elektronica in de zeevaart. Renate en Donalds echtgenote Annemarie gingen zich buigen over de inrichting van het schip. Op die manier zijn veel gezellige avonden gevuld met allerhande plannen. Tijdens de bouw is de familie drie maal in Orsova geweest, voor de laatste maal op 19 augustus 2016 toen het schip te water ging en de eerste doop kreeg. Het schip is genoemd naar de vroeg overleden moeder van Donald en Renate.
